I am a pretty big fan of girl power pop songs that demand a good car dance.  This especially includes anything Katy Perry.  The other day, I was driving home from work and her current hit, “Last Friday Night” came on the radio.  Immediately my mood perked up and I smiled as I thought about the Friday nights I used to live for.  I remember that when I was in high school, you absolutely had to have something to do on Friday night.  Saturday nights were fine for staying home with the fam, but Fridays were all about going out.  During football season, I would get all dolled up and head to the football game with my pack of friends.  I would roam the stands with my friends for the whole game, hardly even glancing at the action on the field, looking for my crush du jour.  Unless of course my crush happened to be on the football team, but honestly, I didn’t get that ambitious most of the time.  If it wasn’t football season I would drive around in my parent’s minivan, filled to the brim with friends.  We would cruise Lyons Avenue, get Del Taco for dinner, and then find trouble to get into to.  One of our favorite pastimes was driving 50mph down a backwoods two lane road, with two girls lying face down on the roof racks of the minivan, on the ride of their lives.  Another favorite activity was getting day old bagels out of the dumpster of the local bagel shop, then throwing them out the sunroof at pedestrians on Hollywood Boulevard.  Clearly, our frontal lobes were not yet fully developed.

Once I graduated from high school and was living my post secondary life, my Friday nights contained a few more elements of Katy’s Perry’s song. In our town, the place to be on Friday nights was, not so creatively, T.G.I. Friday’s.  I would arrive around 10 p.m. with a few friends and we would always run into old friends (and crushes) at the bar.  Sometimes we would head out with our re-acquaintances and find something to do, usually involving a jacuzzi and more alcohol.  I was never much of a club girl, but for awhile, I frequented the Sunset Blvd hot spot Saddle Ranch and trolled for boys with foreign accents while drinking ridiculously huge carafes of alcohol with embarrassing names.  Even in my early to mid twenties, I lived to have something going on Friday nights.

Now Friday nights look a lot different.  In fact, I still live for Friday nights because  Mr. Wonderful and I have declared Friday night “Date Night”.  We have a wonderfully predictable and happy routine of going to dinner at one of a handful of favorite restaurants and then we watch a movie from Netflix.  Well, really I watch about twenty minutes of the movie before I pass out cold (at 10 pm) from the exhaustion of the week. Listening to Katy Perry’s song about hi jinx and craziness on Fridays makes me smile when I remember my Fridays of the past, but I wouldn’t trade my present Fridays with the love of my life for anything.
